Landon was only two when he was diagnosed with an astrocytoma in February of 2013. The tumor was embedded in his brain stem. Half of the tumor was able to be removed during surgery and he then started chemotherapy within days. Fifteen months of weekly chemotherapy took a toll on Landon. He suffered from right-side paralysis, his speech was impaired and his vision in his left eye was weak. Landon worked hard week after week at physical, occupational and speech therapy and within nine months he met all of his therapy goals and had entirely regained use of this right side. He was considered in remission. Just months later, his tumor showed regrowth. On September 1, 2016 Landon began his second fight against this tumor by receiving chemo every other week for the next year. On September 25, 2017 Landon rang the bell at Sanford in Fargo signifying that he was in remission; however, three months after he rang the bell, the tumor returned for a third time. This time was more difficult because even after trying two different types of chemo, the tumor continued to grow. In March of 2019 the family decided to try a fairly new procedure known as laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT). During this surgery doctors were able to essentially burn the tumor from the inside outward. The neurosurgeon was able to remove almost 90% of Landon‘s tumor during the surgery. Landon was eating within hours after the surgery, he was up walking, laughing and playing the next morning. In May Landon began a postoperative chemotherapy treatment which he is still taking. A January 2020 MRI showed that the tumor is still shrinking and responding to treatment. Landon is a fighter. His tumor is currently stable, but his bone marrow has been damaged so doctors are working to repair his bone marrow so that he can restart chemo again. When he grows up, he wants to help others by being a doctor. One interesting thing about Landon is that he has a collection of anything that pertains to knights including swords, helmets and books. He admires a knight because of their courage, faith, strength, bravery and the determination to fight a battle. To us, it sounds like he his describing his own attributes.
